French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed transitional Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara in the Élysée Palace yesterday, Wednesday, marking his first visit to a Western country since taking office after the ousting of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December.
Macron greeted al-Shara with a handshake in the courtyard of the presidential palace, where a contingent of the Republican Guard was lined up, according to reporters from Agence France-Presse.
The two presidents are set to hold a press conference following their meeting.
