Kenya Supports Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the Sole Solution to the Sahara Issue

Kenya has expressed its unequivocal support for the autonomy plan proposed by the Kingdom of Morocco to resolve the regional dispute over the Sahara, deeming it the only sustainable approach capable of ending this conflict. The Kenyan government praised the dynamism led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in this regard and the growing international consensus surrounding the legitimacy of this plan.

This position was articulated in a joint statement released following a meeting on Monday in Rabat between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, and the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of the Republic of Kenya, Musalia Mudavadi. The Kenyan side reasserted its commitment to work alongside countries that share the same vision to implement this realistic and credible plan.

The statement highlighted that Kenya applauds the increasing international consensus on the Moroccan initiative, considering it the only practical and applicable framework, in complete harmony with UN efforts aimed at finding a final solution to the dispute. Both parties reiterated their commitment to the exclusive oversight of the United Nations in the political process related to the Sahara issue and their support for relevant Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2756 adopted in 2024.

For its part, Morocco expressed its appreciation for Kenya’s supportive position and Nairobi’s commitment to collaborating with the UN Secretary-General and his personal envoy to advance the political process based on consensus and realism, which enhances stability in the region and supports opportunities for development and continental integration.
