Moroccan Ports Experience Over 10% Increase in Activity
Moroccan ports registered a total traffic of 60.8 million tons in the first quarter of 2025, compared to 55.2 million tons during the same period last year, marking a growth of 10.2%.
According to data released by the Ministry of Equipment and Water regarding national port activities, national traffic, excluding passenger activity, amounted to 30.5 million tons, representing an increase of 7.7%. Meanwhile, passenger traffic reached 30.3 million tons, reflecting a rise of 12.7% compared to the first quarter of 2024.
Passenger activity constituted 49.9% of the total port traffic, followed by imports at 29.5%, exports at 16.4%, bunkering at 3.6%, and fuel supply for ships at 0.6%. Imports reached 17.9 million tons, up by 2.8%, while exports totaled 10 million tons, increasing by 13.7%. Bunkering efforts amounted to 2.2 million tons, showcasing a rise of 31.6%, whereas fuel supply for ships decreased by 7.1% to reach 392,900 tons.
Certain strategic categories saw significant increases, with the number of containers reaching 2.9 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), a rise of 10.5%. Imported fuel reached 3.2 million tons, an increase of 7.2%, and associated products totaled 7.1 million tons, up by 2.3%. International road transport also rose to 158,152 units, an increase of 7.1%.
Conversely, some categories witnessed declines, including coal at 2.4 million tons, down by 1.8%, and grains at 2.1 million tons, experiencing a decrease of 22%. The number of new vehicles was limited to 136,854 units, reflecting a drop of 21%.
On the other hand, passenger traffic reached 720,645 travelers by the end of March, an increase of 3.9% compared to last year, while maritime tourism saw a robust increase of 46.9%, with ports welcoming 55,668 cruise passengers. However, landings of coastal and traditional fishing products dropped by 24.5%, stabilizing at 136,856 tons during the same period.
