Visas for immigration to Britain may require an “A” level in English.

Reports indicate that migrants may need to learn a higher level of English in order to work in the United Kingdom and could face long waiting periods before they can settle permanently in the country.

An official report on immigration is set to be published next week to review the reforms, as British Prime Minister Keir Starmer takes stricter action on immigration following the Labour Party’s losses in the local elections on May 1 to the anti-immigration Reform Party, according to British news agency PA Media.

The Times reported that among the new stringent measures under consideration is raising the English language proficiency level required for migrants applying for work visas in the UK.

The paper stated that in the future, applicants will be required to have an equivalent of an “A” level in English, rather than the current General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) standard.

The Financial Times noted that migrants may have to wait up to ten years before they can apply for indefinite leave to remain in the UK.

Currently, most migrants arriving in Britain on time-limited work visas can apply for indefinite leave to remain after five years.

The Conservative Party’s “deportation bill” and Labour’s plans to tighten their stance on immigration aims to win back voters from the Reform Party led by Nigel Farage.
