Google officially launches the NotebookLM app for free
Google has officially launched its much-anticipated NotebookLM app on the Google Play and App Store just hours before its scheduled release coinciding with the Google I/O 2025 conference.
The NotebookLM app can be downloaded for free on Android devices, as well as iPads and iPhones, allowing users to enjoy all the features available through the web version of the service.
This marks the first appearance of the NotebookLM service outside of a web browser, as users can now download the app directly to their smartphones and benefit from its features, which include generating audio summaries of document content—an ideal option for those short on reading time.
The app supports uploading PDF files, Google Docs, Google Slides presentations, website links, and public YouTube videos, capable of summarizing content, generating questions, and answering inquiries about users’ files and resources, in addition to creating AI-generated podcasts.
The app can run in the background and supports offline mode. It begins usage through a “Get Started” page that explains the features in three introductory slides. Users can then upload content from multiple sources using the “+ Create New” button.
The app features three main tabs: sources, conversation, and studio, where users can ask questions in the “conversation” tab, add or remove sources in the “sources” tab, while creating an audio podcast in minutes without needing to keep the app open, using AI in the “studio” tab.
The podcast player includes full controls such as fast forward and rewind, play and pause, sharing, speed adjustments, and more, and the resulting voice sounds remarkably natural, not robotic. Google is expected to detail the app’s features during the Google I/O 2025 conference.
