Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti, the new head of the Brazil national football team, has called up several Premier League players in his first squad for the “Samba Dancers,” while excluding Neymar, who recently recovered from a lengthy injury.
Ancelotti is preparing to lead Brazil in his first match next month during the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup against host nation Ecuador, followed by home matches against Paraguay on June 5 and 10.
The former Real Madrid manager announced a squad of 25 players late Monday night, including Manchester United duo Casemiro and Antony, along with Tottenham striker Richarlison.
Casemiro last appeared for the national team in 2023 but has played under Ancelotti during two stints at Real Madrid. The seasoned midfielder returns to the Brazil squad following a strong finish to the season with Manchester United.
During a press conference held yesterday, Ancelotti spoke about Casemiro, stating, “In my opinion, he is a fantastic player. I have been fortunate to have him with me, and I believe the national team needs players with charisma, strong character, and talent. The Brazilian team has always boasted plenty of talents.”
Ancelotti added, “In modern football, you also need to add commitment, sacrifice, and fighting spirit, and Casemiro possesses those qualities. Many of those called up share those attributes.”
Neymar has suffered from long-term injuries over the past two years before returning to his childhood club, Santos, in January. However, he has had to wait to return to the national team.
Several other key players, such as Ederson Moraes, Manchester City’s goalkeeper, Gabriel Magalhães, Arsenal’s center-back, Newcastle’s Joelinton, and Real Madrid’s Rodrigo, have also been excluded due to injuries.
Ancelotti clarified, “Casemiro has returned to the Brazil squad to play and prepare well for the World Cup. I spoke to him to explain this call-up, and he agrees with us.” The seasoned coach continued, “The roster includes many surprises, as there are several players who are injured or in recovery.”
The reason behind Antony’s opportunity to return to the Brazil team stems from his loan spell at Real Betis, where he scored nine goals. He is now aiming to lead the team towards winning the UEFA Conference League title against Chelsea tomorrow, Wednesday.
