A crocodile ends the life of a man while swimming in Indonesia

Authorities in Indonesia reported that a man was found dead yesterday, Wednesday, following a crocodile attack while swimming in a canal on Sumatra Island.

The spokesperson for the National Search and Rescue Agency, Basarnas, stated that the 45-year-old man was swimming with a friend the day before, Tuesday, when the crocodile pulled him underwater.

Reports indicate that the man’s friend attempted to grab his arm but was unable to save him.

Rescue teams located the body approximately 200 meters from where he was last seen. The canal runs through a palm oil plantation.

Environmental groups say the expansion of these plantations has led to disruption of natural habitats and an increase in encounters between humans and crocodiles.

It is noted that Indonesia experiences the highest number of crocodile attacks compared to any other country, with most of these attacks involving saltwater crocodiles. Between 2015 and 2024, over 1,100 attacks were reported, with more than 550 of these being fatal, according to the organization Croc Attack.
