“Trump 2028”… The American President Promotes a Third Term Through Merchandise For Sale in His Store
Former U.S. President Donald Trump is selling merchandise featuring the slogan “Trump 2028,” indicating the possibility of his candidacy for a third term in the White House, which is prohibited under the U.S. Constitution, according to The Telegraph.
On his official website, the former president showcases his famous red hats, along with shirts and coolers emblazoned with the slogan. The shirts also feature the phrase “Rewrite the Rules” in parentheses.
Although Trump is barred from serving more than two terms as mandated by the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, which explicitly prohibits this, the 78-year-old president has stated that he is considering a run for a third term. In March, he remarked that he is “not joking” about his ambitions and that “there are ways” to make it happen.
The tradition of a two-term limit dates back to George Washington, the first president of the United States, who famously chose not to run for a third term, asserting that he did not want the new nation to develop into a monarchy.
This tradition was largely followed by subsequent presidents until Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd president, who served three complete terms in office before dying shortly after his fourth term in 1945.
In 1951, the two-term limit was officially enacted through the 22nd Amendment, stipulating that “no person shall be elected to the office of President more than twice.”
Nonetheless, many of Trump’s supporters encourage the idea of him running again in 2028.
Steve Bannon, a former chief strategist during Trump’s first term, told NewsNation last month that the president “will run and win again in 2028.”
A poll conducted by Reuters/Ipsos and published on Wednesday revealed that a slim majority of Republicans believe the former president should not seek a third term, with three-quarters of respondents stating he should not run again.
However, even among Republican politicians, support for the idea of a third term is growing; Tennessee Congressman Andy Ogles has introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives to amend the Constitution to allow Trump to run again.
Still, this proposal is unlikely to succeed due to the stringent requirements for its passage, which necessitate approval from two-thirds of both the House and the Senate, as well as ratification by three-fourths of state legislatures.
Despite these obstacles, Trump and his allies seem to be promoting this idea.
His second son, Eric, shared a link to the merchandise on his X platform account, accompanied by a picture of a “Trump 2028” shirt; he was also seen wearing the new red hat.
Earlier this month, Trump stated that he “would like” to compete against Barack Obama, who is constitutionally barred from running after two terms.
When asked by a journalist if he would run against Obama if the former president sought a third term, Trump replied, “I’d love that, it would be great. I want that.”
