The Shari’a Welcomes Abbas on His First Visit to Damascus

The Shari’a Welcomes Abbas on His First Visit to Damascus
A A

Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara received Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the People’s Palace in Damascus yesterday, Friday.

The Syrian presidency stated that al-Shara and his Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani welcomed Abbas and his accompanying delegation during the Palestinian leader’s first visit following the changes in Syria and the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

Observers in Damascus consider Abbas’s visit to be of exceptional importance given the complexities of the Palestinian issue in Syria, especially with the existence of Palestinian factions that were loyal to the previous regime, all of which had their offices and military bases closed.

The observers emphasized that Abbas would discuss bilateral relations and the presence of Palestinians in Syria, currently estimated at over half a million people, as well as the rebuilding of the Yarmouk camp, which serves as the capital of the Palestinian diaspora.
