In a serious escalation, armed militants affiliated with the Polisario Front blocked UN trucks transporting logistical equipment for the MINURSO mission this morning, Monday, at the Awsard axis east of the security wall in Western Sahara, as they were heading towards the Aguinit area.
Informed sources confirmed that the UN trucks were on an official mission to provide logistical support to the mission before being intercepted by elements of the organization and forced to turn back, with no statement or clarification issued by the leadership of the Front.
This maneuver represents a direct violation of the ceasefire agreement and an open challenge to the UN mandate in the region, placing the MINURSO mission before a new test amid escalating field threats east of the wall.
This incident highlights once again the security risks posed by the Polisario Front and necessitates firm measures against the organization’s elements to protect the United Nations mission.
