Mahdia Beach Promenade Drenched in Darkness and Stray Dogs… and Bouass Is a Thing of the Past

The promenade of Mahdia Beach in the province of Kenitra is experiencing a significant decline in infrastructure, marked by a near-total absence of street lighting and a growing population of stray dogs, posing a real threat to the safety of visitors, especially at night.

Scenes of utter darkness have become commonplace along the promenade, while stray dogs roam freely without any intervention from responsible authorities. This situation has sparked a wave of discontent among citizens who expressed their dissatisfaction with the continuation of this state of affairs, despite repeated complaints. Worse still, the local council has not even removed the sand dunes that have encroached upon the promenade’s walkway for over a month, obstructing pedestrians and detracting from the beach’s beauty.

Despite warnings from local activists and on-the-ground calls for restoring this coastal area, no concrete steps have been taken by the head of the Mahdia municipality, Abdel Rahim Bouass, who is facing increasing criticism for what many consider “a persistent failure to manage even the simplest matters related to basic services.”

In the context of following up on the issue, the newspaper attempted to contact the municipality head to inquire about the anticipated measures to address these problems; however, his phone went unanswered, intensifying the criticism surrounding his lack of communication and engagement with local issues.

Several observers of local affairs believe that the absence of a clear vision within the municipal council, coupled with the president’s hesitation to make decisive decisions, have significantly contributed to the deteriorating situation. They accused him of merely maintaining a symbolic presence without launching field projects to improve lighting, enhance cleanliness, and curb disorderly conduct.

Amid this reality, voices calling for the intervention of the Kenitra provincial delegate, Abdul Hamid Al-Mazid, are rising, urging him to assess the scale of the decline the municipality is experiencing and to take emergency decisions to restore the promenade and the city, improving safety and attractiveness in the area.
