Kaspersky Warns: AI Image Apps Threaten Your Digital Privacy

Kaspersky Warns: AI Image Apps Threaten Your Digital Privacy
A A

Kaspersky has issued a warning regarding the rising trend of sharing Studio Ghibli-style modified images through AI applications, asserting that while this fad appears entertaining, it conceals serious threats to privacy and digital security.

According to the statement, these applications collect high-resolution personal photos from users and transform them into shareable artwork on social media. However, many people are unaware, as Kaspersky points out, that these images may eventually be exploited in phishing schemes or used for identity theft, especially given the increasing ability of AI to generate realistic images that are difficult to distinguish from original photographs.

The announcement highlighted that 44% of users of these apps share their results online, increasing the likelihood of data exploitation. It also revealed that 43% of users believe creating digital copies capable of impersonation will soon be possible.

Kaspersky urged users to carefully review privacy policies before uploading any images, ensuring they understand whether their data will be sold or stored for extended periods. Additionally, it warned about fraudulent platforms claiming to offer Ghibli-style artwork with the aim of stealing data or embedding malware.

The statement emphasized the need to be cautious of details in the background of photos, such as workplace or residence locations, which could later be exploited in social engineering attacks. It reminded users that every image shared, even if for entertainment purposes, becomes part of a digital footprint that is hard to erase.
