British Petroleum: Senegal Becomes a Gas-Producing Country After Exporting First Shipment
British Petroleum announced on Thursday that it has loaded the first shipment of liquefied natural gas from the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim project, which it shares with Mauritania, marking the official launch of gas production for both countries.
The company stated in a release that “this first shipment will affirm the positions of Mauritania and Senegal as liquefied natural gas exporting countries,” noting that it “safely loaded the first shipment of liquefied natural gas from the first phase of the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim project.”
The British company emphasized that this shipment from the two countries represents a new significant supply for global energy markets.
According to British Petroleum’s forecasts, the first phase of the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim project is expected to produce around 2.4 million tons of liquefied natural gas annually to meet global energy needs, with quantities of gas set aside for local markets in Mauritania and Senegal.
British Petroleum, along with U.S.-based Cosmos Energy, Senegal’s Petroleum Company, and the Mauritanian Hydrocarbons Company, exploits the gas field designated for the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim project, which commenced operations in December of last year.
The Grand Tortue Ahmeyim project is anticipated to produce approximately 2.5 million tons of liquefied natural gas annually, with the field’s total reserves estimated at around 25 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
