5 Measures to Prevent Depression, Dementia, and Stroke

Studies and research indicate that 48% of women and 36% of men will experience a stroke, dementia, or depression at some point in their lives.

However, a new study suggests that the risk of developing one or more of these conditions can be significantly managed by making some simple lifestyle changes.

According to the American newspaper "New York Post," the study highlighted that at least 60% of stroke cases, 40% of dementia cases, and 35% of late-life depression cases can be addressed by taking the following measures:

Puzzle Solving
Researchers confirmed that engaging in puzzles and crosswords can reduce the risk of dementia, similar to reading or learning a second language. They stated, "The idea is that anything that stimulates your mind will keep you mentally active as you age."

Diet
While meat and protein-based diets are currently popular for weight loss, regarding brain health, the Mediterranean diet—which heavily relies on vegetables, fruits, dairy products, fish, and nuts—appears to be the optimal choice.

Exercise
Consistent with previous findings, the study discovered that moderate to high physical activity may reduce the risk of brain diseases. Prior studies have shown that just 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week can lower the risk of death from all causes by 31% compared to not engaging in any physical activity.

Social Interaction
The study also indicates that individuals with more social relationships have better memory, sharper thinking, and a lower risk of dementia. Regular interaction keeps the mind active, reduces stress, and even boosts the release of happiness-inducing chemicals like oxytocin and dopamine.

Setting Life Goals
The study concludes that having a sense of purpose and a plan for one’s life extends longevity and maintains mental sharpness and intelligence into old age. Scientists believe that this sense alleviates stress, encourages social interaction, and provides individuals with reasons to get out of bed every morning—adding years to their lives.
