Qatar Warns Its Citizens Against Discussing Palestine in America… and Encourages Arab Communities to Engage

In a move revealing a stark double standard, the Qatari Embassy in Washington issued a guiding statement for its citizens, urging them to avoid any political activity during their visit to the United States, including refraining from speaking on sensitive issues such as the Palestinian cause.

The statement emphasized the need to "adhere to local laws," "respect the duration of stay," and "focus on studies," but conveyed a clear message: silence is the best policy, especially regarding Palestine.

Meanwhile, the state’s media arm, Al Jazeera, continues to escalate its rhetoric within American universities, providing minute-by-minute coverage of Arab community activities, promoting protests, and heightening political agitation. The channel advocates for raising Palestinian flags, boycotting academic events, and organizes extensive coverage it refers to as a "student uprising."

The gap between the official discourse and the behavior of the state-owned media outlet has become more apparent. Qatar does not want its citizens involved in political disputes on foreign soil, yet it does not hesitate to push others to the forefront. It uses Arab communities as pressure tools while shielding its citizens from direct confrontation with U.S. authorities.

This political hypocrisy raises real questions: why is a Qatari citizen expected to remain silent while others are encouraged to confront? Why is the Palestinian cause used solely as a media platform, leveraged according to location and interest, rather than as a steadfast principle?

Qatar publicly adopts a narrative supportive of Palestine, yet in reality, it manages the scene with cautious strings. It calculates American reactions and separates its citizens from its media messages.

While Qatari students are warned against expression, Arab students are granted a platform to escalate. The result: political protection for the citizen and media fuel through which Qatar can amplify its external rhetoric.
