Copyright as a Lever for Rebuilding the Moral Authority of Journalism

In the context of the media sector reform dynamic, a study day dedicated to copyright in print and electronic journalism began on the morning of Friday, April 3, 2026, in Rabat. This initiative reflects a qualitative shift in addressing journalistic products as creative works with both material and moral value.

The meeting, organized by the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication in partnership with the Moroccan Bureau of Copyright and Related Rights, is still ongoing. However, initial indications confirm that we are facing an open workshop that transcends technical dimensions, aiming for a profound restructuring of the journalist’s role within the media system.

The opening speech by the Minister set the general framework for this workshop, emphasizing that recognizing copyright in journalism is no longer merely a legal luxury but a fundamental entry point for restoring dignity to the profession and enhancing intellectual production. Similarly, the Director of the Moroccan Bureau of Copyright highlighted that integrating journalists into the system of related rights is a first step toward enabling them to benefit from exploitation revenues, especially concerning reproduction rights, with the aim of establishing practical application of these rights after years of setbacks.

Discussions occurring within this meeting are initially focused on establishing the principle before delving into the details of implementation, reaffirming that a journalistic article is not just passing news content but a protected intellectual work deserving acknowledgment and appreciation. This shift in approach could reshape the relationship between journalists and media institutions while paving the way for the development of a more balanced economic model based on content quality and protection.

This workshop also emerges as one of the possible mechanisms to combat the phenomenon of piracy, which has significantly undermined the value of journalistic products. Media materials are often reproduced and republished without respecting the rights of their owners, adversely affecting the credibility and sustainability of the sector.

In this context, activating copyright is expected to foster genuine pluralism by encouraging original productions, thereby rebuilding trust with the audience.

While the discussions are still ongoing, what emerges from this meeting confirms that it marks the beginning of a journey aimed at establishing a new vision for journalism as a field of creativity and value. Subsequently, the mechanisms for implementation and the practical procedures related to benefiting from these rights will be detailed in a follow-up reading that will accompany the outcomes of this study day once it concludes.
