The High Commission for Planning: A 0.6% Decrease in the Consumer Price Index in February 2026
The High Commission for Planning announced that the consumer price index recorded a decrease of 0.6% in February 2026 compared to the same month last year. In a report regarding the price index, the Commission indicated that this decline resulted from a 2.0% decrease in food prices, while non-food prices increased by 0.4%.
The same source noted that the changes in non-food prices varied, with transportation costs dropping by 2.7%, and prices in the “other goods and services” category rising by 3.8%.
When comparing to January 2026, the consumer price index increased by 0.5%, due to a 0.8% rise in food prices and a 0.3% increase in non-food items. Increases in food prices from January to February 2026 were particularly noted in “fish and seafood” by 4.5%, “fruits” by 2.1%, “meat” by 1.6%, and “vegetables” by 1.0%. Prices of “milk, cheese, and eggs” as well as “coffee, tea, and cocoa” rose by 0.4%.
On the other hand, prices of “oils and fats” dropped by 2.2%, and “mineral water, soft drinks, and fruit and vegetable juices” decreased by 0.4%. Meanwhile, non-food items saw an increase in fuel prices by 3.1%.
Cities recorded the highest increases in the price index, with Oujda and Tangier at 1.4%, Tetouan at 1.2%, and Fes, Kenitra, and Al Hoceima at 0.7%. Beni Mellal saw a rise of 0.6%, while Agadir, Meknes, and Dakhla increased by 0.5%, and Casablanca, Rabat, and Settat by 0.3%. Conversely, the cities of Safi, Guelmim, and Errachidia experienced decreases of 0.4% and 0.2%, respectively.
As for the core inflation index, which excludes items with fixed prices and highly volatile products, it rose by 0.2% compared to January 2026, but declined by 1.2% compared to February 2025.
