Morocco Enhances Protection of Electronic Payments Through Partnership Between Visa and Switch Al Maghrib
Visa and Switch Al Maghrib (SWAM), the national operator of the electronic payment system, have announced a partnership aimed at strengthening fraud detection for card transactions. This initiative includes the integration of the “Visa Advanced Authorization” solution within the national system, an tool that evaluates fraud risks in real-time before any transaction is completed, whether online or in-store.
The system relies on analyzing data related to each payment, assigning a “risk score” to every transaction that helps identify suspicious activities before they are approved. This approach allows for proactive intervention during the authorization phase, rather than detecting fraud after the transaction has occurred, thereby enhancing user protection and reducing financial losses.
This initiative comes at a time when Morocco is witnessing an expansion in the use of electronic payments and an increase in digital fraud methods. It encompasses all local transactions processed through the national switch, with SWAM focused on keeping pace with digital advancements and ensuring uninterrupted electronic banking services.
Under the supervision of Bank Al-Maghrib, SWAM oversees the direction, compensation, and settlement of electronic transactions among financial institutions. The integration of this technology is part of efforts to modernize the national payment infrastructure while maintaining ease of use and seamless operations for citizens.
