Morocco Welcomes 1.3 Million Tourists in a Single Month, Tourism Revenues Reach Nearly 12 Billion Dirhams
Morocco’s tourism sector has started 2026 on a strong note, with over 1.3 million visitors recorded in January, marking a 3% increase. This surge has enabled the kingdom to generate nearly 12 billion dirhams in revenue, fueled by major events, particularly the Africa Cup of Nations 2025.
According to data from the Directorate of Financial Studies and Forecasts, this positive performance is attributed to improved tourist inflows from various international markets, notably France (+14%), Poland (+40%), Italy (+6%), the United States (+15%), Belgium (+5%), and Canada (+10%).
Registered overnight stays in classified accommodation establishments witnessed a 12% increase by the end of January 2026, benefiting from the attractiveness of tourist destinations coinciding with the continental event. This increase spanned several cities, including Casablanca (+36%), Marrakech (+7%), Agadir (+11%), Tangier (+31%), Rabat (+42%), along with Ouarzazate, Errachidia, Fez, and Essaouira.
In terms of revenues, tourism income rose by 19.3% in January, reaching 11.7 billion dirhams compared to 9.8 billion dirhams during the same period last year, reflecting a significant improvement in tourist spending.
Air transport also experienced a notable revival, as national airports welcomed over 3.1 million passengers in the same month, an increase of 14.7%, driven by growth in international (+14.9%) and domestic (+13.1%) travel. This development encompassed various destinations, especially in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas.
On the other hand, air freight activity increased by 7.4%, while port activity continued to exhibit positive performance throughout 2025, with cargo volumes at ports rising by 8.9% to reach 262.6 million tons, driven by an uptick in transit, imports, and exports.
Passenger traffic through ports also grew by 5.4%, reaching approximately 5.6 million travelers, alongside a remarkable resurgence in cruise tourism, which posted a 41.7% increase, welcoming over 383,000 tourists.
This consistent dynamic performance reflects the Moroccan tourism sector’s ability to capitalise on major events and enhance the attractiveness of the national destination, reinforcing the kingdom’s position as a regional and international tourism hub.
