Costa Rica Confirms Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative in the Sahara
Rabat – The Republic of Costa Rica confirmed today, Friday, that Morocco’s autonomy initiative represents “the most suitable, serious, credible, and realistic basis” for resolving the regional conflict over Western Sahara. It stated that “autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the most viable solution” to this issue.
This position came in a joint statement following discussions between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Costa Rica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship, Arnoldo André Tinoco, who is on a working visit to the Kingdom.
Costa Rica emphasized its intention to “act based on this stance at political, diplomatic, economic, and consular levels,” reaffirming its commitment to support Morocco’s efforts on this matter.
The country also praised the international consensus surrounding UN Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), acknowledging Morocco’s significant focus on the Sahara issue and its “close monitoring of the current positive momentum led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI.”
The two ministers also expressed their support for the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy for the Sahara, emphasizing the need for continued efforts to achieve tangible progress toward a final political solution to the conflict.
