Akhannouch resolves the lawyers’ crisis with Wahbi and freezes the referral of the profession’s bill to Parliament.
The Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, has ended the crisis between lawyers and the Minister of Justice regarding Bill 66.23, which pertains to the organization of the legal profession. This follows the announcement by associations of lawyers in Morocco to suspend strikes that had paralyzed the courts and resume work starting next Monday.
In a statement issued by the associations, they invited members of the legal profession to return to providing their services after the Head of Government responded positively to their main demand to suspend the referral of the profession’s bill to Parliament.
The associations revealed that their president held a meeting with Akhannouch, at the latter’s invitation, on Wednesday morning, where it was agreed to form a committee at the level of the Prime Minister’s office, under his supervision, and with the participation of the Moroccan Bar Association, to open a “responsible, serious, and consultative” discussion on the contents of the bill.
The professional bodies praised the Head of Government’s willingness to rebuild trust and ensure the continuity of the profession in fulfilling its societal roles, considering that this initiative reflects “a high institutional sense and a responsible spirit in managing the issue.”
Lawyers expressed their satisfaction with the decision to postpone the bill’s referral to Parliament until the committee concludes its work, affirming their positive engagement with this step by returning to the dialogue table, with the committee’s first meeting scheduled for Friday.
The office of the associations of lawyers commended the patience of various components of the professional body, including presidents, counselors, and peers, emphasizing that this mobilization was in defense of the independence and protection of the noble foundations of the profession.
