Trump: I Will Not Use Force to Take Control of Greenland, but the United States Must Own It
On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that he does not intend to resort to force to take control of Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, while emphasizing that the United States “needs to own it.”
In his remarks to world leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump stated that acquiring Greenland “will likely only happen if excessive force is used,” adding that his country has the capability to do so if it wanted, but he stressed that he would not take that route.
The American president clarified: “I don’t need to use force, I don’t want to use it, and I won’t use it,” considering this statement important in allaying concerns among some about the possibility of Washington resorting to military action to assert control over the territory.
