The opening of the Ecuadorian embassy in Rabat has sparked discontent in Algeria.
Diego Morichon Bathminia, the Ecuadorian Ambassador to Morocco, stated that his country’s decision to open an embassy in Rabat has led to displeasure among certain countries, notably Algeria, which has halted its trade relations with Ecuador, particularly regarding banana exports.
During a scientific meeting held at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities in Rabat in partnership with the Department of Spanish Studies, the ambassador explained that Ecuador is committed to strengthening its strategic relations with Morocco despite the negative reactions. He emphasized that the embassy’s opening reflects Ecuador’s desire to reinforce its diplomatic, political, and cultural presence in the region.
The ambassador highlighted the importance of enhancing academic and cultural cooperation as a pillar of official diplomacy, revealing the embassy’s plans to launch joint cultural projects and to prepare cooperation agreements between Mohammed V University and several Ecuadorian universities. This aims to facilitate student and faculty exchanges and to promote the Spanish language and Latin American culture in Morocco.
For his part, Azeddine Tahri, head of the Spanish Studies Department, affirmed that this meeting is part of the university’s policy of opening up to the international environment, aiming to provide students with direct interaction with diplomats and deepen their knowledge of Moroccan-Latin American relations.
