Launch of the 19th World Water Conference in Marrakech

The 19th World Water Conference commenced in Marrakech from December 1 to 5, 2025, with the presence of Nizar Baraka, Minister of Equipment and Water, Khalid Sassi, Governor of the Marrakech-Safi region, and Samir Koudar, President of the Regional Council, along with prominent national and international figures and experts in water resource management. This major international event follows Morocco’s hosting of the seventh edition of the conference in 1991 in Rabat.

In his opening speech, Minister Nizar Baraka emphasized that the conference’s central goal is to adopt innovative approaches to confront the worsening water crisis exacerbated by drought, diminishing water resources, and increasing demand. He stressed that traditional solutions are no longer sufficient, necessitating enhanced cooperation among various stakeholders and the formulation of practical, implementable recommendations.

For his part, Yuan Yuan Li, President of the International Water Resources Association, stated that the conference serves as a pivotal platform for exchanging advanced experiences in water management. He asserted that it is not merely a gathering of experts but a space for developing a sustainable water culture and exploring ways to tackle the effects of climate change. He highlighted that the objective of this scientific week is to be a turning point in mobilizing international efforts to establish a sustainable water governance system, stressing that water should be a source of peace and unity among peoples. The choice of Marrakech for this event is due to its cultural and historical significance related to water, making it an ideal platform for international discussions on the future of this vital resource.

The inaugural session witnessed high-level attendance, including ministers, experts, and officials from water institutions across continents, such as Muhammad Idrissi, Deputy Mayor of Marrakech, along with representatives from international organizations and global research centers. Over 1,500 experts, researchers, and international officials are participating in the conference, which features a program comprising four high-level sessions discussing international water policies and strategies, and more than 140 technical sessions led by prominent experts, addressing areas like desalination, water treatment, reuse, and fog harvesting techniques. The event also includes scientific presentations and research posters showcasing the latest studies and innovations in water resource management, as well as technical and innovation exhibitions, parallel activities for professionals and researchers, and field visits to observe Morocco’s pioneering projects in this field.

The organization of this conference reflects Marrakech’s standing as a venue for major international dialogues and as a center for collective thinking on vital issues affecting the future of humanity and the environment. The event will conclude with the launch of the “Marrakech Declaration,” which will serve as a reference document to enhance the integration of science, public decision-making, and practical application, accelerating global efforts to protect water resources and ensure their sustainability.

The world faces complex water challenges, including water scarcity, drought, resource pollution, and increasing demand, underscoring the significance of this conference in presenting innovative solutions, advanced technologies, and boosting international cooperation. It also offers Morocco and participating countries an opportunity to exchange experiences and translate knowledge into actionable policies and projects.

The 19th World Water Conference in Marrakech is not merely a scientific event but a platform for exchanging ideas, experiences, building international partnerships, and promoting a sustainable culture of water resource management. Amid rising pressure on resources due to climate change and demographic growth, the conference presents a genuine opportunity to formulate practical and forward-looking solutions that ensure water sustainability for future generations.
