Data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association on Tuesday showed an increase in new car sales in Europe for the fifth consecutive month in November, supported by a rise in electric vehicle registrations in markets including Germany, Italy, and Spain.

The market share for electric vehicle registrations reached 21 percent in the European Union, 26 percent in the United Kingdom, and 98 percent in Norway.

The automotive industry in Europe faces challenges, including competition from China, U.S. tariffs on imports, and difficulties in achieving profitability while complying with local laws that promote the transition to electric vehicles.

Last week, the European Commission announced a plan to revoke a ban that was set to begin in 2035 on vehicles powered by internal combustion engines, following pressure from the automotive sector in the region, marking the most significant rollback of the bloc’s environmental policies in recent years.

However, analysts say that electric vehicles are the future in the long term.

The data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association indicated that sales in the EU, the UK, and the European Free Trade Association rose by 2.4 percent to 1.1 million vehicles in November.

The Association stated in a release, “Despite the recent positive momentum, overall sales remain significantly below pre-pandemic levels.”
