Akhannouch Comments on Safi Floods: 37 Dead and Rescue Efforts Continue
The Prime Minister, Aziz Akhannouch, reported that the city of Safi has recently experienced severe flooding due to heavy rainfall. He confirmed that the city recorded 27 millimeters of rain in a short period, which he deemed significant. During a monthly session dedicated to questions about public policy on Monday, Akhannouch expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
He added that the flooding particularly impacted the historic Bab El Shaba market, which is traversed by the Shaba River, noting that the torrential waters led to the deaths of 37 individuals and injured ten others.
An emergency meeting was held today at the Prefecture of Safi, chaired by the Wali of Marrakech-Safi, Khalid El Hbeil. The meeting included the Province Governor, Mohamed Ftah, the region’s council president, security authorities, and officials from decentralized departments, to monitor the situation, assess the extent of the damage, and take urgent measures to mitigate the flood’s effects and ensure citizens’ safety. It was emphasized that all human and logistical resources would be mobilized, and coordination among various stakeholders would continue, along with ongoing support for the affected individuals.
