Trump’s advisor confirms to the Secretary-General of the Arab League that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only solution to the Sahara issue.
Matt Boulton, the U.S. advisor on Middle Eastern affairs, stated that Morocco’s autonomy initiative represents the only foundation for a fair and lasting solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue.
Boulton mentioned in a post on X that a key topic discussed with Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit was the steadfast U.S. position, which regards the Moroccan proposal as a realistic and credible solution for achieving a final political settlement.
He added that Washington continues to support Rabat’s approach, aligning with the growing international stance favoring autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.
The meeting also addressed several regional issues, with both sides condemning the atrocities committed against civilians in El Fasher, Sudan, and calling for urgent action to protect civilians and halt the violence.
They reiterated their support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and Libya’s unity, as well as their backing for Somalia’s efforts in combating terrorism.
Boulton emphasized that maintaining the ceasefire in Gaza remains a primary priority for the U.S. administration within its efforts to calm the situation and enhance peace prospects in the region.
