Niger Commends UN Resolution 2797 and Affirms Full Support for Moroccan Sovereignty Initiative

Niger expressed great satisfaction following the adoption of Resolution 2797 by the United Nations Security Council on October 31, which solidified the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as a serious, realistic, and practical solution to end the regional dispute over the Sahara. This position was articulated during discussions held on Thursday in Rabat between Niger’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Nigeriens Abroad, Bakari Yaou Sangaré, and his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita.

The Nigerien minister emphasized that his country views the new UN resolution as a pivotal moment that reflects the international community’s recognition of the seriousness of the Moroccan approach and its capacity to provide a lasting and acceptable political settlement. He expressed Niger’s full support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his personal envoy in leading the next phase of the negotiation process.

During the meeting, Sangaré clarified that Niger considers Morocco’s proposed autonomy plan as the most effective framework to move towards a final solution that ensures regional stability and enhances opportunities for joint development. He reaffirmed Niger’s readiness to continue political and diplomatic coordination with Rabat on this vital issue.
