Moroccan Ambassador in London: UN Security Council Resolution 2797 Strengthens the Moroccan Solution and Unity of the Southern Provinces

Morocco’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Hakim Hajoui, stated that UN Security Council Resolution 2797 regarding Western Sahara represents a significant diplomatic advancement and reflects King Mohammed VI’s long-term vision.

In an article published in the Daily Telegraph, Hajoui noted that the resolution came ahead of the 50th anniversary of the Green March, a historic event in which 350,000 unarmed Moroccan citizens peacefully marched towards the southern provinces to promote national unity.

The ambassador added that, half a century later, the Green March remains a symbol of trust and solidarity between generations. He emphasized that the royal vision has contributed to the development of the southern provinces, transforming them into a model of sustainable growth through major infrastructure projects and renewable energy initiatives, such as the Atlantic Port of Dakhla, which will connect African markets to Europe and the Americas.

Hajoui pointed out that this transformation also includes enhanced democratic participation, mentioning that voter turnout in the 2021 elections exceeded 66 percent, reflecting citizens’ confidence in their future within the Moroccan democratic framework.

Regarding Moroccan-British relations, the ambassador highlighted that the long historical ties reached a critical turning point this year with the UK’s support for Morocco’s autonomy plan, seen as the most credible and feasible solution to the conflict in Western Sahara.

Hajoui stressed that Resolution 2797, with the backing of the United States, France, the United Kingdom, and other international partners, solidifies the international consensus that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty represents the most realistic path toward lasting peace.

He concluded his article by emphasizing Morocco and the United Kingdom’s shared commitment to sustainable growth and the promotion of security and stability in a world facing continuous fluctuations.
