Morocco Secures Radar Maintenance Contract for American F-16 Aircraft, Enhancing Its Air Capabilities
In a significant step that underscores Morocco’s ambitious strategy to build an integrated aerial system, the Kingdom has solidified its position as a key player in military aviation at both regional and international levels. This strategy focuses on combining the acquisition of modern combat platforms, technology transfer, and the development of local infrastructures, ensuring that Morocco can maintain and operate its air fleet efficiently while enhancing readiness to face various security challenges.
In this context, the U.S. Department of Defense has awarded Northrop Grumman a contract worth $303.6 million for maintenance and rehabilitation services of radar components for F-16 aircraft. Morocco is the only African country benefiting from this contract, alongside seven other nations, including Bahrain, Bulgaria, Greece, South Korea, Slovakia, Taiwan, and Jordan.
According to an official release from the U.S. Department of Defense, the execution of this contract extends until November 2030, as part of the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program associated with the F-16 aircraft system office. The agreement includes radar maintenance services for these aircraft fleets, reflecting Morocco’s growing role in the operation of this type internationally.
The contract holds significant strategic importance, as it ensures the sustainability of the readiness of Moroccan aircraft and enhances operational efficiency and rapid response capability across various military missions. It also reflects international partners’ confidence in Morocco’s technical and organizational capabilities, reaffirming its status as a key player within the F-16 operational system regionally and globally.
This initiative aligns with Morocco’s efforts to modernize its air capabilities, as the Kingdom aims to acquire 24 new F-16V “Viper” aircraft while updating its existing fleets to the same advanced standards. Morocco has previously received U.S. approvals for the transfer of F-16 technology valued at over $50 million, aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and ensuring the sustainability of aircraft performance.
Locally, Morocco is advancing the construction of a heavy maintenance facility at Ben Slimane Airport, designated for advanced maintenance of F-16 aircraft, expected to be operational by 2026. This project contributes to enhancing national capabilities for performing maintenance internally and reducing reliance on foreign services.
These initiatives embody Morocco’s strategy to build an integrated aerial system, combining the acquisition of modern combat platforms, technology transfer, and the development of local infrastructures, thereby affirming the Kingdom’s advanced position in the international F-16 operational system and ensuring the sustainability of its air capabilities in the long term.
