Moroccan-Belgian Agreement to Enhance Scientific Cooperation in Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy

Morocco and Belgium have signed a new cooperation agreement in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy on the sidelines of the World Nuclear Energy Exhibition (WNE), held in Paris from November 4 to 6. The agreement aims to strengthen the exchange of expertise and advance scientific research and training in this area.

The agreement was signed by Morocco’s National Center for Energy, Nuclear Science, and Technology (CNESTEN) and Belgium’s Nuclear Research Center (SCK-CEN), with signatures from Hamid Merah, Director General of CNESTEN, and Peter Beiten and Derek Philip Gosselin, the Director General and Head of the Belgian center, respectively.

The agreement stipulates the deepening of scientific and academic cooperation between the two institutions and the development of joint programs in nuclear education and training. Additionally, it aims to support regional and international capacities in utilizing research reactors, in line with international standards for nuclear security and safety.

Both institutions are recognized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) under the International Centers of Excellence in Research Reactor (ICERR) program, granting them a pivotal role in disseminating knowledge and sharing best practices in peaceful nuclear technology.

This collaboration solidifies Morocco’s position as a responsible actor and a reliable partner in the development of safe and sustainable nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, reflecting its commitment to enhancing research and innovation through strategic international partnerships.
