Severe Earthquake Leaves Fatalities in Afghanistan
At least 20 people have been killed as a severe earthquake struck northern Afghanistan overnight, according to the Health Ministry in Kabul on Monday.
The ministry’s spokesperson, Sharafat Zaman, stated in a video distributed to journalists: “Approximately 320 citizens have been injured, and more than 20 people have been killed” in Balkh and Samangan provinces, emphasizing that “this number is provisional.”
An earlier official toll reported 9 deaths and over 250 injuries due to the earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 6.3 on the Richter scale according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
