The National Institute of Archaeology and Heritage has announced the discovery of new architectural remains that highlight the features of military architecture during the Roman period in Morocco, located near the archaeological site of Volubilis.

A statement from the institute indicated that this discovery resulted from ongoing fieldwork led by the Moroccan-Polish archaeological mission in the areas surrounding the city of Volubilis, which concluded its activities on October 30, 2025.

The statement added that this project is a product of cooperation between the National Institute of Archaeology and Heritage and the Polish Center of Mediterranean Archaeology at the University of Warsaw, with the Polish team led by researcher Radoslaw Krazewicz-Szczeporecki, while the Moroccan team was supervised by Fadwa Benjaafar from the institute.

Benjaafar stated that the mission managed to discover two watchtowers that were part of the surveillance and defense system along the borders of the province of Mauretania Tingitana during the period spanning the first to the third centuries AD.

The statement further noted that the mission also found evidence of a third watchtower, alongside the remains of a funerary monument belonging to a type known as a tumulus. This monument is described as an earthen mound covered with a layer of small stones and surrounded by a circular trench approximately 40 meters in diameter.

According to Benjaafar, such monuments exist at various archaeological sites in Morocco, often dating back to the Mauritanian period. She emphasized that it is currently impossible to ascertain the date of the site until the study of ceramic finds is completed.
