Trump Urges Democrats to End Government Shutdown as Closure Enters Its Seventh Day
U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Democrats to end the financial standoff that has paralyzed part of the federal government for a week, following another failed attempt in the Senate to reach an agreement.
Trump stated on his platform, Truth Social: “I am ready to discuss their failed health policies or any other topics, but they must first allow the government to reopen.”
As was the case last Friday, Republican proposals received only three Democratic votes in the Senate, far short of the 60 needed to break the deadlock.
Both parties are trading blame over the impasse, which has resulted in hundreds of thousands of federal employees being temporarily furloughed.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries condemned the “complete silence” from the White House, accusing the administration of halting any communication with the opposition.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre warned of potential layoffs if the crisis persists.
Over two million federal employees are feeling the effects of this shutdown, as their pay has been suspended until a budget agreement is passed.
Beginning Tuesday, this “government shutdown” will enter its seventh day, still far from the record of 35 days set between December 2018 and January 2019.
