Spanish Police Use Force to Disperse Pro-Palestine Demonstrations to Maintain Public Order
On the evening of Saturday, October 4, massive demonstrations took place in Madrid, Valencia, and Barcelona, with more than 170,000 people participating to support the Palestinian people and protest the detention of passengers from the “Maritime Resistance” fleet heading to Gaza.
The initially peaceful marches later descended into chaos and clashes as protesters attempted to breach security cordons and move towards government institutions. This prompted the Spanish police to intervene with crowd dispersal measures.
In Madrid, violent confrontations were reported between demonstrators and security forces, while the police in Barcelona deployed pepper spray, tear gas, and batons, as well as warning shots fired into the air to clear the crowds.
Security sources clarified that the intervention aimed to preserve public order and ensure the safety of property and bystanders, emphasizing that actions were taken in accordance with legal regulations.
Despite criticism surrounding the circulated images on social media, Spanish authorities reaffirmed that maintaining public order remains a priority in all democratic countries.
