Just 14 hours after appointing his new government, the new Prime Minister of France submitted his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron on Monday, which was accepted. Élisabeth Borne, who was only appointed last month, was Macron’s fifth Prime Minister in two years.
This resignation reflects the worsening political crisis France has faced since July 2024, amidst a divided Parliament where no group holds a majority.
Anger from Opponents and Allies Alike
Borne, a close ally of Macron, announced her cabinet formation on Sunday evening after weeks of consultations with political parties from various spectrums. However, the new cabinet sparked anger among both opponents and allies.
Political parties deemed it either too right-wing or not right-wing enough.
Macron tasked Borne on September 9 with forming a new government following the National Assembly’s vote of no confidence against François Bayrou’s government in light of his proposed austerity budget. Party disagreements over the government had previously led to the ousting of Bayrou and his predecessor, Michel Barnier.
