Opening the 151st Session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union with the Participation of a High-Level Moroccan Delegation in Geneva

On Monday in Geneva, the 151st session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) commenced, featuring an important Moroccan delegation led by Mohamed Ould El Rachid, President of the House of Councillors.

This session is attended by hundreds of parliamentarians and experts from over 120 countries, under the theme: “Ensuring Respect for Humanitarian Standards and Supporting Humanitarian Work in Times of Crisis”, amidst an international context marked by increasing humanitarian crises worldwide.

Discussions during this meeting are focused on the vital role of parliaments in upholding international humanitarian law, supporting independent relief efforts, and enhancing multilateral cooperation to serve populations affected by conflicts. Estimates from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) indicate that over 310 million people worldwide are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance today.

The Moroccan delegation is participating in various standing committees and specialized forums, including those dedicated to young female parliamentarians and women parliamentarians, as well as workshops and meetings for the governing bodies of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

Several topics are under discussion, with a focus on protecting vulnerable groups such as internally displaced persons, women, youth, and minorities, in addition to food security, recognition of victims of illegal international adoption, post-conflict peacebuilding, arms control, economic justice, and climate change.

Before the opening of the general session, the Moroccan mission participated in the 39th extraordinary conference of the Arab Parliament and preparatory meetings for the geopolitical groups to which Morocco belongs.

On the sidelines of the meetings, Mohamed Ould El Rachid, alongside members of the House of Councillors Office — Miloud Messaid (Moroccan Trade Union), Mohamed Salem Ben Massoud (General Union of Workers), Mustafa Moucharik (National Rally of Independents), and Abderrahmane Aifa (Authenticity and Modernity) — and the Secretary-General of the council, Asaad El Zarouali, held a series of bilateral meetings with heads of parliaments from friendly and partner countries.

The Moroccan delegation to this assembly includes several parliamentarians, among them deputies Ahmed El Touizi (Authenticity and Modernity), Mustafa Rdad (National Rally of Independents), Ahmed Al Alami (Istiqlal), and Khadouj Selassi (Socialist Union), along with advisors Kamal Ait Mik (National Rally of Independents) and Hassan Choumais (Authenticity and Modernity), in addition to Najeeb El Khadi, Secretary-General of the House of Representatives.
