Moroccan Pepper Shines in Europe: Exports Surge by 94% Despite Years of Drought

Moroccan exports of peppers to European markets have seen a remarkable increase over the past ten years, nearly doubling with a rise of about 94%, demonstrating the resilience of Moroccan agriculture in the face of ongoing climatic challenges for six years.

According to recent data from the agricultural analysis platform “Hortoinfo,” Morocco has secured the third position among major pepper suppliers to the European Union for the 2024-2025 season, with exports amounting to approximately 185 million kilograms, which represents 12.6% of the total European imports, valued at over 247 million euros with an average price of 1.34 euros per kilogram.

The report indicated that the total EU imports of peppers during the current season reached around 1.47 billion kilograms, valued at nearly 3.1 billion euros, with Spain maintaining its lead with a share of 38% despite a decline in its exports, followed by the Netherlands at 20%, while Turkey and Germany ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.

This performance, according to industry observers, highlights the flexibility of agricultural production chains in Morocco and their ability to adapt to resource scarcity and climatic pressures, thanks to the expansion of protected crops and the adoption of more effective and sustainable irrigation methods.
