Kenitra Moves to Resolve Waste Crisis with New Landfill Project in Ouled Melik
After years of environmental pollution and residents suffering from the odors emanating from the old landfill, Kenitra is finally nearing the end of one of its most pressing issues. The local council has approved a project to establish a new landfill in the Ouled Melik area, covering an area of 100 hectares. This project is expected to provide a definitive solution to the waste and air pollution problem in the city.
The project, which was included as item number 91 on the agenda of the latest council meeting, received overwhelming support from most members, with the exception of the expected opposition from councilor Belmakissia of the Justice and Development Party, who leads the opposition movement in the council. Belmakissia voted against the project without providing any clarifications or alternatives.
Notably, Belmakissia served as the council’s deputy president for two consecutive terms without proposing any practical solutions to the waste crisis, before choosing to oppose a project considered by many observers to be a qualitative shift in managing the sector.
Sources within the council stated that the project is the result of coordination between the municipality and local authorities, relying on modern technical and environmental standards to ensure sustainable waste management and alleviate the longstanding suffering in the neighborhoods of the city and its outskirts.
Residents of Kenitra welcomed the decision with great relief, considering it a successful step by the authorities and the council to finally launch a long-awaited realistic solution, following years of promises and political debate that failed to yield tangible results.
