Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai wins the Nobel Prize for Literature 2025
The committee stated in its announcement that the 71-year-old Krasznahorkai has managed, through his works, to “reaffirm the power of art in a time filled with horror and turmoil, through writing that oscillates between absurdity and profound reflection.” It added that his literary output places him in “an esteemed lineage of Central European writers, from Kafka to Thomas Bernhard,” due to its sharp philosophical insights and unique linguistic style.
Krasznahorkai is known for his ability to transform everyday details into existential contemplations, characterized by long, flowing sentences and uninterrupted paragraphs—a style he describes as “an attempt to reach the essence of reality through writing to the brink of madness.”
He is expected to receive his award on December 10th during the annual Nobel Prize ceremony, coinciding with the anniversary of its founder Alfred Nobel’s death. The monetary value of the award this year is 11 million Swedish Krona (approximately 1.1 million USD).
