In a new diplomatic development reflecting the expansion of international support for Morocco’s position on the Sahara issue, the Kingdom of Cambodia announced today its backing for Morocco’s autonomy initiative proposed in 2007, reaffirming its full support for the kingdom’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
This announcement came in a joint statement following video talks between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn.
The statement highlighted that Cambodia commends Morocco’s “serious, realistic, and credible” efforts to find a lasting political solution to the regional conflict over the Sahara, considering the autonomy proposal as the most realistic and credible framework for resolving the issue.
Prak Sokhonn also confirmed Cambodia’s full support for Morocco and its backing of the efforts led by the UN Secretary-General and his personal envoy, in line with relevant Security Council resolutions.
Both sides also expressed their rejection of “all separatist agendas” that undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, warning that such entities pose a direct threat to regional security and stability, on par with the threats posed by terrorist organizations.
This new stance from Cambodia reinforces the growing support for Morocco’s initiative in Asia and affirms the international community’s conviction in the seriousness of the approach led by King Mohammed VI to achieve a realistic and sustainable political solution to the Sahara issue.
