Britain: Plan to Create 400,000 Jobs in Renewable Energy

- in International

The British government announced on Sunday a national plan aimed at creating 400,000 jobs in renewable energy by 2030, with a specific focus on training workers transitioning from fossil fuel sectors.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband stated in a ministry release that this plan “provides a decisive response to a major question: the future of quality jobs.”

The initiative includes measures to ensure that companies benefiting from public support or government contracts create sustainable jobs across the clean energy sector.

Unions welcomed the announcement, which they had been advocating for in order to establish a clear framework to assist workers transitioning from fossil fuel industries to clean energy professions.

General Secretary of the Unite union, Sharon Graham, remarked that “the measures outlined in this plan represent the first steps toward an ambitious strategy, supported by a substantial public investment program,” emphasizing that “good, stable jobs must be at the heart of any green transition.”

The plan also includes the establishment of five new technical excellence colleges to train youth for future careers. Pilot projects will launch in England and Wales, backed by £2.5 million in funding for new training centers, courses, and career counseling.

Additionally, a specialized employment integration program for veterans will direct them toward jobs in solar panel installation, wind turbine factories, or nuclear plants. Other measures will cater to released prisoners, youth, and job seekers.

According to a government study, around 13,700 unemployed individuals already possess the necessary skills for key roles in the clean energy sector, especially in engineering and specialized technical professions.
