Washington Reaffirms Its Strong Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty over Western Sahara Ahead of UN Security Council Decision
At a time when the UN Security Council is set to discuss the Western Sahara issue and renew its annual mandate, the United States has sent a clear signal regarding its steadfast position on the matter. Mike Polus, senior advisor to former President Donald Trump on African affairs, announced that he conveyed Washington’s explicit support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara to UN envoy Staffan de Mistura.
Polus, who shared a photo from the meeting on his X account, emphasized that he reiterated his country’s stance that “serious autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only viable solution to the conflict.” He noted that discussions also covered the role of the MINURSO mission in maintaining stability, as well as regional peace prospects and future coordination ahead of the Security Council session.
This position serves to clarify any confusion raised by Polus’s earlier remarks, where he linked the success of the autonomy proposal to the acceptance of the Polisario Front, before subsequently retracting that statement.
The American official had visited Algeria last July as part of a North African tour dedicated to the Western Sahara issue, while Rabat was absent from the visit’s itinerary despite earlier announcements of plans to travel to Morocco.
