Morocco has ranked fourth in Africa among the largest importers of solar panels from China during the period between July 2024 and June 2025, with imports reaching 915 megawatts, behind South Africa (3,784 megawatts), Nigeria (1,721 megawatts), and Algeria (1,199 megawatts).
According to a recent report by the research center “Ember,” the continent’s imports of Chinese solar panels surged by 60% to 15,032 megawatts, compared to 9,379 megawatts in the previous period. This indicates a “real start” for solar energy in Africa, where 20 countries have recorded new highs and 25 countries imported over 100 megawatts.
The report highlighted that this boom could contribute more than 5% to electricity production in 16 countries, while Sierra Leone alone could reach 61% of its 2023 production if the imported panels are installed. However, despite this expansion, the gap with fossil fuels remains vast; Morocco’s imports of petroleum derivatives during the same period exceeded those of solar panels by more than 80 times, compared to over 100 times in Nigeria, and just twice in Algeria.
