Moroccan Ambassador to Italy, Youssef Bella, affirmed that the Kingdom, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, has made energy transition a strategic choice, contributing to transforming the Mediterranean region into a space for opportunities, innovation, and shared prosperity.
This statement was made during a roundtable discussion at the Mediterranean Festival, where he highlighted major projects led by Morocco on both national and regional levels, including the Noor solar power plant and wind farms in Tarfaya and Tangier.
The ambassador explained that approximately 42% of Morocco’s energy mix is currently green, with a goal of reaching 52% by 2030. He pointed out the Kingdom’s ambitions in the green hydrogen sector, aiming to produce 14 terawatt-hours by 2030 and launching six projects worth €30 billion.
He added that Morocco, thanks to competitive production costs, is poised to become a natural supplier for Europe.
In the tourism sector, Youssef Bella emphasized that Morocco offers a “unique proposition” combining ancient cities, deserts, mountains, and coastlines, and is investing in new areas such as medical, digital, and cinematic tourism. He considered the joint organization of the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal as an opportunity to enhance the appeal of the Mediterranean region.
He also called for the adoption of a Mediterranean Charter for sustainable and responsible tourism and praised the success of the Tangier Med Port, along with structural projects like the underwater tunnel between Morocco and Spain and the Euro-African digital highway to strengthen connectivity and infrastructure.
The ambassador stressed the need for cooperation to address common challenges, including climate change, irregular migration, and geopolitical tensions, emphasizing that Morocco is ready to work with all partners to establish a fair partnership between Africa, the Mediterranean, and Europe, making the region a resource for dialogue, innovation, and shared prosperity.
