Morocco Elected as Vice President of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors

Morocco was elected today, Monday, as the Vice President of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors for the period 2025-2026, represented by the Permanent Ambassador of the Kingdom to international organizations in Vienna, Azeddine Farhan.

This election came with the support and consensus of the 134 members of the Group of 77 and China (Vienna Chapter).

The Board also approved the election of Australian Ambassador Ian David Biggs as President of the Board for the “Far East” Group, while Romanian Ambassador Stelian Stoian was elected as Vice President representing the Eastern European Group.

In a speech following his election, Ambassador Farhan expressed gratitude to the Group of 77 and China for the trust they placed in Morocco, affirming the Kingdom’s commitment, amidst current geopolitical challenges, to contribute to enhancing dialogue and negotiation and maintaining the “spirit of Vienna consensus.”

Morocco’s election received widespread acclaim from various regional groups and member states, which viewed this choice as recognition of the role the Kingdom plays, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, in promoting South-South cooperation, defending multilateralism, and supporting consensus-building efforts.

The Board of Governors is one of the two main bodies of the International Atomic Energy Agency, alongside the General Conference, with key responsibilities including reviewing the agency’s program and budget, considering membership requests and safeguard agreements, and appointing the Director General with the General Conference’s approval.
