Indonesia Ranks Second Globally in Installed Geothermal Capacity, Strengthening Its Leadership in Renewable Energy

Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlihl Lahadalia, announced on Tuesday that Indonesia has become the second-largest country in the world in terms of installed geothermal capacity, following the United States. This reinforces its leading role in the global transition towards sustainable energy.

The ministry stated that the installed capacity of the Indonesian island reaches 2,744 megawatts, compared to 3,937 megawatts in the United States, while Indonesia’s total geothermal potential is estimated at 23,742 megawatts, making it one of the most prominent countries in this field globally.

Minister Lahadalia emphasized that Indonesia “is capitalizing on this strategic advantage and remains open to international partnerships to accelerate the transition towards renewable energy,” highlighting opportunities for technology transfer and cooperation to enhance the national economy and ensure a sustainable future.

For her part, Enia Lestiani Dewi, the Director-General of New and Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation, noted that the government has established an incentivizing framework that includes tax incentives and research programs to support the development of the geothermal sector and enhance its sustainability.

She affirmed that geothermal energy is a strategic pillar for energy security in Indonesia, providing a continuous power supply that complements intermittent energy sources such as solar and wind.

Located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia boasts more than 130 active volcanoes, giving it the highest geothermal potential in the world. A significant portion of these resources is already being utilized, contributing to reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuels and aiding in the fight against climate change.
