Half a Million Moroccans Attend Quranic Schools, Most of Whom Are Women

The Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, Ahmed Tawfiq, revealed that the number of people attending Quranic schools in Morocco approaches half a million, with women making up over 70% of this figure, which exceeds a quarter of a million women.

This statement was made by the minister yesterday, coinciding with the launch of the illiteracy eradication program in mosques for the 2025–2026 academic year, which falls under the royal care for education and training, and emphasizes the role of the mosque in promoting spiritual safety and facilitating access to knowledge, particularly for women.

The ministry confirmed that a large number of female beneficiaries of the illiteracy program in mosques have managed to memorize the entire Quran, stating that the primary goal of this initiative is to empower them to read and recite the Book of God.

In this regard, Tawfiq announced that his ministry is in the process of renewing a unique Quran manuscript, penned by more than 75 women beneficiaries of the illiteracy program, highlighting the contributions of Moroccan women to the service of the Quran.

This manuscript involved the participation of over 75,000 women, each writing one word from the Quran, in complete alignment with the official Quran version endorsed by the Mohammed VI Foundation for the Propagation of the Holy Quran, and under the supervision of the Ministry of Endowments.

A copy of this manuscript was previously presented to King Mohammed VI during the opening of the Ramadan Hassanian lessons in 2015. It was beautifully adorned with Moroccan calligraphy and floral decorations, made with silk, and was described as a unique experience reflecting the success of the illiteracy program in mosques and empowering women to serve the Book of God.
