“Casablanca – South” Station: A New Railway Project to Alleviate Commuting Pressure and Congestion in the Economic Capital
In the context of significant developments within the railway transport sector in Morocco, the city of Casablanca officially launched the construction of the “Casablanca – South” station on Wednesday. This station is positioned as a key hub for the future of transportation in the kingdom’s economic capital. This initiative is part of a massive program valued at 20 billion dirhams, launched by King Mohammed VI, aimed at enhancing urban transportation services and strengthening connections between the economic capital and its surroundings.
Mohamed Rabie Khlaï, the Director General of the National Railway Office, confirmed that this new station will significantly help address the daily commuting challenges faced by the city. It seeks to implement suburban trains primarily for citizens commuting between their workplaces and homes, operating at a high frequency and at affordable costs.
Khlaï explained that the capacity of these trains is equivalent to approximately 1,300 cars, which will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions and ease traffic congestion in the city. The program also includes the development of three major lines to connect various urban and semi-urban hubs, ensuring access to strategic locations such as the Hassan II Grand Stadium and Mohammed V International Airport.
Furthermore, the initiative includes a fast line connecting the Port of Casablanca to Mohammed V Airport with trains departing every 15 minutes, stopping only at major stations. Enhancements to regional train services toward El Jadida and Settat will also be included, along with the construction of ten suburban stations and three major stations, as well as technical centers and maintenance workshops.
