Akhannouch at the United Nations: Morocco Leads Innovative Policies to Address Water Scarcity and Climate Change
Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch stated in New York that Morocco, facing ongoing structural drought, continues to adopt innovative policies to tackle water scarcity, guided by royal directives. These policies include transferring water between basins, desalinating seawater, reusing treated water, and promoting water-efficient irrigation systems, alongside completing the construction of dams and other strategic initiatives.
In his speech representing the Kingdom at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Akhannouch pointed out that the world is currently confronting a geopolitical reality closely linked to the impacts of climate change, which affect the lifestyles and economies of nations, reshaping the international order and threatening global peace and security.
The Prime Minister noted that His Majesty King Mohammed VI regards climate change as one of the most pressing challenges facing humanity today, as it poses a threat to environmental sustainability, economic and social development, and global stability and security.
Akhannouch also highlighted the importance of the energy transition and enhancing the capacity to confront climate change through investments in renewable energy. He emphasized that no country, regardless of its strength, can address these challenges alone, and effective international cooperation has become a necessity for achieving sustainable, shared goals.
